Study Note

'Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls' — the invitation draws on Sirach 51:26 ('put your neck under the yoke of wisdom and let your soul receive instruction') and Jeremiah 6:16 ('you will find rest for your souls'), presenting Jesus as Wisdom incarnate offering the true Torah-yoke. The description of Jesus as 'gentle and humble in heart' (praus kai tapeinos tē kardia) is unique — the only place in the Gospels where Jesus explicitly characterizes his own inner disposition. The 'yoke' in Second Temple Judaism referred to the acceptance of Torah obligations; Jesus's yoke 'is easy' (chrēstos, kind, suited to the bearer) because his instruction flows from divine wisdom and enables rather than burdens. The verse has been formative for Christian mystical and contemplative traditions that read it as an invitation to intimacy with the divine character.
