Matthew 23:37

KJV

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

Study Note

'O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen doth gather her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!' The lament over Jerusalem is one of the Gospels' most emotionally transparent moments, revealing divine longing frustrated by human refusal — a pattern the Old Testament traces back to Hosea 11:8. The maternal image of the gathering hen is remarkable: Jesus uses feminine imagery for his own desire to protect, just as Psalm 91:4 and Deuteronomy 32:11 use eagle/mother-bird imagery for God. Luke 19:41-44 presents the complementary account of Jesus weeping over Jerusalem.

ASV

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killeth the prophets, and stoneth them that are sent unto her! how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

YLT

`Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that art killing the prophets, and stoning those sent unto thee, how often did I will to gather thy children together, as a hen doth gather her own chickens under the wings, and ye did not will.

BBE

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, putting to death the prophets, and stoning those who are sent to her! Again and again would I have taken your children to myself as a bird takes her young ones under her wings, and you would not!
