Amaziah, the son of Joshah, was a descendant of Simeon.
Amaziah was the ninth king of Judah, reigning around 796–767 BC, and received a mixed assessment: 'He did right in the sight of the LORD, yet not like his father David; he did according to all that Joash his father had done' (2 Kings 14:3). After defeating Edom in the Valley of Salt, he unwisely challenged the northern king Jehoash to battle and suffered a humiliating defeat; Jerusalem's wall was breached and the temple treasuries were plundered (2 Kings 14:8–14). He adopted the gods of Edom after his victory there, a sin rebuked by a prophet (2 Chronicles 25:14–16). He was eventually killed by conspirators who had fled to Lachish, where they overtook and killed him (2 Kings 14:19).
