Athaiah

Exile > · H6265
Old Testament

Athaiah, a descendant of Judah, was one of the people who resettled in Jerusalem after the exile (Neh.11.4).

Athaiah son of Uzziah was a descendant of Judah through the line of Perez, Hezron, and Mahalalel, and was one of those who resettled in Jerusalem after the exile (Nehemiah 11:4). Nehemiah's deliberate repopulation of Jerusalem involved bringing one in ten Judahites to live in the city, selected by lot, while the remainder settled in the surrounding towns. The inclusion of Athaiah's detailed genealogy in Nehemiah 11 reflects the importance of tribal lineage for establishing legitimate claims to residency in the holy city. He is known only from this post-exilic record.
