Old Testament

Ichabod was the son of Phinehas, born when the ark of God was captured by the Philistines and named to reflect the departure of glory from Israel.

Ichabod was the son of Phinehas, born on the day the ark of the covenant was captured by the Philistines and his father, grandfather Eli, and uncle Hophni all died (1 Samuel 4:19–22). His mother, dying in childbirth, named him Ichabod—meaning 'where is the glory?' or 'no glory'—lamenting that the glory had departed from Israel with the loss of the ark. His name became an epitaph for a moment of catastrophic spiritual defeat in Israel's history. His nephew Ahimelech appears later as a priest who aided David (1 Samuel 21–22), connecting the line of Eli to the subsequent narrative.
