Jochebed

Exodus & Wilderness Tribe of Levi · H3115
Old Testament

Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, married her nephew Amram and became the mother of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.

Jochebed was the mother of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, a daughter of Levi who married her own nephew Amram (Exodus 6:20; Numbers 26:59). When Pharaoh decreed the death of all Hebrew male infants, she hid her son Moses for three months and then placed him in a papyrus basket on the Nile, where Pharaoh's daughter found him—and Jochebed herself was engaged as his wet nurse (Exodus 2:1–10). Her courageous act of faith preserved the future deliverer of Israel, and Hebrews 11:23 honors her and Amram for acting without fear of the king's command.
