Jubal

Early Patriarch · H3106
Old Testament

Jubal was the father of all who play the lyre and pipe.

Jubal was the son of Lamech and Adah, a descendant of Cain, and is identified in Genesis 4:21 as 'the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe.' He and his half-brother Tubal-cain represent the beginning of music and metalworking respectively, placing the origins of human culture and the arts within the early chapters of Genesis. His name is linguistically related to the Hebrew word for 'ram' or 'trumpet' (yōbēl), linking him to the tradition of wind instruments. Jubal stands as the biblical archetype of the musician.
