New Testament

Lois, the grandmother of Timothy, was commended by Paul for her sincere faith.

Lois was the grandmother of Timothy, commended by Paul for her 'sincere faith' that had dwelt first in her and then in her daughter Eunice before passing to Timothy (2 Timothy 1:5). She was likely Jewish, given that Timothy's mother Eunice was Jewish while his father was Greek (Acts 16:1). Lois thus represents the transmission of Jewish faith and scriptural knowledge across three generations, which would have given Timothy his remarkable grounding in the 'sacred writings' (2 Timothy 3:15). She is the only grandmother named in the New Testament.
