Orpah

Moab · H6204
Old Testament

Orpah was Naomi's daughter-in-law who stayed in Moab after the death of her husband, while Ruth accompanied Naomi to Bethlehem.

Orpah was a Moabite woman, the wife of Chilion son of Elimelech and Naomi, and the sister-in-law of Ruth (Ruth 1:4–14). When Naomi urged both daughters-in-law to return to their own families after the death of her sons, Orpah wept and kissed Naomi goodbye before returning to Moab—a choice presented without moral condemnation in the text. Her departure sets in relief Ruth's extraordinary loyalty, which drives the narrative of the book. Naomi refers to Orpah's departure as returning to 'her people and her gods.'
