Terah

Patriarchs (Abraham–Joseph) Early Patriarch · H8646G
Old Testament

Terah was the father of Abraham, Nahor, and Haran, who left Ur to settle in Haran.

Terah was the father of Abraham, Nahor, and Haran, and the head of the family that initiated the migration from Ur of the Chaldeans toward the land of Canaan (Genesis 11:26–32). The journey stopped at Haran, where Terah died at the age of two hundred and five. Joshua 24:2 notes that Terah and his ancestors 'served other gods' beyond the Euphrates, establishing that Abraham's call was a departure from an idolatrous background. The reason the migration halted at Haran is not explained in the text; Jewish tradition sometimes attributes this to Terah's continued paganism. Terah's household included his grandson Lot, whose subsequent career is intertwined with Abraham's. He is listed in Luke's genealogy of Jesus (Luke 3:34).
