Study Note

Paul expresses his desire that the Philippians 'hold forth the word of life' so that he may rejoice 'in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.' The athletic metaphor of running 'not in vain' (Galatians 2:2; 1 Corinthians 9:24-26; 2 Timothy 4:7) ties the success of Paul's apostolic labor to the perseverance of those he has brought to faith — his race is run through them. The phrase 'hold forth the word of life' (epechontes logon zoes) may mean both 'hold out' (offering) and 'hold fast' (retaining) — the Philippians' faithful proclamation and retention of the gospel is the proof of apostolic labor's fruit. The eschatological orientation (in the day of Christ) makes present faithfulness decisive for the final evaluation of missionary work.
