Study Note
'His name shall endure for ever: his name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed.' The phrase 'all nations shall call him blessed' deliberately echoes Genesis 12:3 ('in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed'), reading the Abrahamic promise as fulfilled in the Davidic king. Galatians 3:8 identifies the Abrahamic blessing as the gospel preached beforehand to Abraham, and the combination of Psalm 72:17 and Genesis 12:3 creates a scriptural arc from promise to fulfillment through the messianic king.
