The divine disclosure 'thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations' makes the Tetragrammaton (YHWH) inseparable from the patriarchal covenant relationship — the Name and the narrative history are one. The phrase 'my name for ever' (shemi le-olam) and 'my memorial unto all generations' (zikri ledor dor) give the divine name a doxological function across time: YHWH is to be invoked in every generation as the covenantally faithful One. The distinction between the hidden 'I AM WHO I AM' of verse 14 (ontological self-sufficiency) and the revealed 'YHWH God of your fathers' (relational identity) shows that the divine name functions both philosophically and covenantally. The ongoing Jewish practice of not pronouncing the Tetragrammaton reflects the reverence this verse's 'my name' language invites.
