Study Note

The contrast between the Levitical priests who stand 'daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices' and Christ who 'after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God' encapsulates Hebrews' entire argument about the finality of the Atonement. The seated posture is theologically deliberate: priests in the Levitical system never sat, because their work was never finished; Christ's sitting indicates completed, unrepeatable work. Psalm 110:1 ('Sit thou at my right hand') is the most quoted Old Testament text in Hebrews and in the entire New Testament, and its fulfilment in Christ's session grounds the argument that the shadow-system is superseded. The verse stands against every form of eucharistic theology that treats the Mass as a re-presentation or continuation of Christ's sacrifice.
