Cornelius, a centurion, was the first Gentile convert to Christianity through Peter's ministry.
Cornelius was a Roman centurion of the Italian Cohort stationed at Caesarea, described as 'a devout man who feared God with all his household, gave alms generously to the people, and prayed continually to God' (Acts 10:2). A vision directed him to send for Peter, and a simultaneous vision to Peter prepared him to cross Jewish-Gentile social boundaries and visit a Gentile home. While Peter was still speaking, 'the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word,' and the Gentiles spoke in tongues—the 'Gentile Pentecost' (Acts 10:44–47). His conversion and the subsequent discussion at Jerusalem (Acts 11; 15) established the principle that God shows no partiality and that Gentiles receive salvation on equal terms with Jews, a pivot of enormous theological importance.
