Elisha

Old Testament

Elisha was a prophet who performed many miracles and served as a spiritual leader in Israel after Elijah.

Elisha son of Shaphat was the disciple and prophetic successor of Elijah, inheriting a double portion of his spirit (2 Kings 2:9–15). His ministry, spanning several decades under Jehoram, Jehu, Jehoahaz, and Joash, was characterized by numerous miracles: purifying a spring, multiplying oil for a widow, raising a Shunammite boy from the dead (2 Kings 4), healing Naaman the Syrian general of leprosy (2 Kings 5), and striking the Syrian army with blindness (2 Kings 6). Unlike Elijah, who was a lone confrontational figure, Elisha worked closely with communities of prophets and engaged more broadly in international affairs. Even after his death, a corpse thrown into his tomb revived upon contact with his bones (2 Kings 13:21), a final sign of the ongoing power of his prophetic ministry.
