Levite living at the time of Egypt and Wilderness

Gershon (also called Gershom) was the firstborn son of Levi and one of the three founding ancestors of the Levitical clan divisions (Genesis 46:11; Exodus 6:16). His descendants, the Gershonites, were assigned responsibility for transporting the curtains, coverings, and hangings of the tabernacle during Israel's wilderness journeys (Numbers 4:21–28). They were allotted thirteen cities in Canaan after the conquest (Joshua 21:6, 27–33) and continued to serve in prominent musical and liturgical capacities in the Jerusalem temple under David and Solomon.
