Hoshaiah, the son of Maaseiah, was one of the military leaders who sought Jeremiah's counsel after the fall of Jerusalem but later disobeyed his prophetic warning.

Hoshaiah was a military commander who, along with Johanan son of Kareah, approached Jeremiah after the fall of Jerusalem to seek the word of the Lord regarding whether the remnant should flee to Egypt (Jeremiah 42:1). When Jeremiah declared that God commanded them to remain in the land and not to go to Egypt, Hoshaiah and Johanan rejected the prophecy and led the remnant into Egypt anyway, taking Jeremiah with them against his will (Jeremiah 43:1–7). His disobedience illustrates the tragic failure of post-fall Judean leadership to heed the prophetic word even in a moment of national crisis.
