Lysanias, the tetrarch of Abilene, ruled during the time of John the Baptist's ministry (Luk.3.1).

Lysanias was the tetrarch of Abilene, a region northwest of Damascus, during the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar's reign—the year Luke uses to date the beginning of John the Baptist's ministry (Luke 3:1). He is the only one of the rulers mentioned in Luke's synchronism who cannot be identified with certainty from other sources, leading to historical debates about his identification. An inscription from Abila mentioning 'Lysanias the tetrarch' has been used by some scholars to corroborate Luke's reference, though its precise date is disputed.
