The declaration 'Christ our passover is sacrificed for us' is the New Testament's most direct identification of Jesus with the Passover lamb, giving the church's entire redemptive theology its Exodus shape. Paul draws the implication that since the Passover lamb has been slain, the community must now 'purge out the old leaven' — removing the boasting sinner from their midst — because leaven for seven days followed the Passover slaughter in Leviticus 23. The metaphor blends two festival images (Passover and Unleavened Bread) in a way that treats the entire Christian life as a continuing festival of liberation. John 1:29, 36 ('Behold the Lamb of God') and Revelation 5:6 (the slain Lamb) extend the same Passover typology across the entire New Testament.
