Study Note
'Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived.' The warning that practitioners of the listed vices will not inherit the kingdom functions in context as a corrective to the Corinthian slogan 'all things are lawful' (6:12), which apparently licensed libertinism. The 'be not deceived' echoes Galatians 6:7 and suggests that self-deception about the moral seriousness of the gospel is a standing temptation. Galatians 5:19-21 and Revelation 21:8 contain parallel vice lists, together establishing a consistent New Testament pattern: the gospel transforms behavior, and behavioral indifference is inconsistent with genuine gospel reception.
