God's conditional warning to Solomon — 'then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight' — places the entire Temple project within the covenant-curse structure of Deuteronomy 28-32: even the sanctuary is not exempt from the consequences of persistent infidelity. The Temple as a 'proverb and a byword among all people' (v. 7b) inverts its intended function as a sign of divine favour (8:43, 60) — the nations who would come to see God's glory would instead see the ruins of divine judgment. The historical fulfilment in the Babylonian destruction (586 BC) is anticipated here with stark clarity, making this verse part of the Deuteronomistic History's sustained theological explanation of exile as covenant consequence. Jeremiah 7:14 ('I will do unto this house, which is called by my name…as I have done to Shiloh') develops the same anti-temple-idolatry theology.
