'Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you' — the verse presents the Hebrew prophets as themselves puzzled by their own oracles, searching out the timing and manner of the salvation they announced. The phrase 'what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify' (verse 11) introduces the remarkable affirmation that it was the Spirit of Christ operative within the Old Testament prophets — a foundational text for the Christian doctrine of prophetic inspiration and the unity of the testaments. The verse grounds Christian privilege not in superiority to the prophets but in reception of the fulfillment they announced and anticipated.
