To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

Study Note
Paul's compressed gospel statement — 'that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation' — presents the Atonement and the Apostolate as inseparably linked aspects of a single divine act. The phrase 'in Christ' (en Christō) locates the reconciliation as occurring within the sphere of Christ's person and work rather than as a transaction arranged externally to him. 'Not counting their trespasses' (mē logizomenos) is judicial language — the divine ledger records no debt against the reconciled — directly connected to the 'righteousness of God' imputed to believers in verse 21. The mission of reconciliation ('entrusted to us') makes the apostle the continuation and extension of the divine reconciling act, not merely its announcer.
