Study Note

'Ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.' The covenant formula ('I will be their God... they shall be my people') runs from Leviticus 26:12 through Jeremiah 31:33, Ezekiel 37:27 to Revelation 21:3 — it is the defining relational statement of the entire biblical canon. Applying this formula to the Christian community as God's temple (plural 'ye') continues the argument of 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 and reinforces that communal holiness is not merely ethical but theological — God's very presence inhabits the assembly.
