Study Note
'And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels.' Paul's pastoral response to the Thessalonians' suffering reframes their situation eschatologically: present trouble ('tribulation') will be met with future 'rest' (anesin — release of tension, like an unstrung bow) at the Parousia. The verse balances the coming as judgment (verse 8) with the coming as relief for the oppressed, reflecting the prophetic tradition in which the day of the Lord is simultaneously wrath for enemies and salvation for the faithful. Revelation 6:9-11's martyrs crying 'how long?' receive the same promise of coming vindication.
