Study Note
God's announcement 'Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste' is one of the most cited Old Testament texts in the New Testament, applied to Christ in Romans 9:33, 1 Peter 2:6, and Matthew 21:42. The 'tried stone' (eben bohan) may refer either to a tested, proven stone or a testing stone — a cornerstone that simultaneously supports the structure and reveals what is built against it by exposing the alignment or misalignment of everything else. The promise 'he that believeth shall not make haste' (literally 'shall not flee in panic') grounds security not in political alliances (the context is Judah's attempt to ally with Egypt) but in the divine-foundation. The verse became central to New Testament Christology: Christ as the cornerstone whom Israel's builders rejected (Psalm 118:22) but whom God laid as the definitive foundation of the new community.
