The central verse of the fourth Servant Song declares 'All of us, like sheep, have gone astray; each of us has turned to our own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.' The universal 'all of us' and the individual 'each of us' create a scope that encompasses both corporate solidarity in sin and personal accountability, making the verse the most comprehensive Old Testament statement on human moral failure and its vicarious remedy. The image of God 'laying on' (Hebrew: hifgiya) the servant's iniquity points toward substitutionary atonement and is extensively applied to Christ's death in 1 Peter 2:24-25, which quotes both this verse and verse 5. Philip's use of this passage in Acts 8:30-35 to preach Jesus to the Ethiopian eunuch illustrates how early Christianity understood the Servant Songs as fulfilled in the passion of Christ.
