Study Note

Jesus' response to Pilate — 'thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin' — is a compressed theology of delegated authority and differential culpability. The 'from above' (anothen) relativizes Roman imperial power: Pilate's authority is real but derivative, given to him from the divine source. The comparative statement ('greater sin') acknowledges both Pilate's culpability and Judas/Caiaphas's greater guilt — making the passion not a morally undifferentiated event but one in which degrees of responsibility matter. Augustine and Aquinas both examined this verse carefully in developing theories of political authority as legitimate when received from God.
