Old Testament

Adonikam was one of the Jewish exiles whose descendants returned to Jerusalem from Babylon, as recorded in the lists in Ezra and Nehemiah.

Adonikam was the ancestral head of a family whose 666 descendants returned to Jerusalem from the Babylonian exile with Zerubbabel (Ezra 2:13; Nehemiah 7:18). A further sixty-six male members of his family are recorded as returning with Ezra in the second wave (Ezra 8:13). His name, meaning 'my lord has risen' or 'the Lord has arisen,' is appropriate for an exile-era figure. The large numbers associated with Adonikam's clan suggest it was one of the more prominent lay families in the restored community, and members of his house later sealed the covenant under Nehemiah (Nehemiah 10:16).
