Old Testament

Arioch, the captain of King Nebuchadnezzar's guard, was commanded to execute the wise men of Babylon but brought Daniel before the king to interpret his dream.

Arioch was the captain of the guard under King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, commanded to execute all the wise men of the kingdom when they failed to interpret the king's troubling dream (Daniel 2:14–25). When Daniel approached Arioch with 'wisdom and tact' and asked for time to interpret the dream, Arioch arranged for Daniel to appear before Nebuchadnezzar. After God revealed the mystery to Daniel, Arioch presented him to the king. A different Arioch—king of Ellasar—appears as one of the four eastern kings in the battle described in Genesis 14. The Babylonian Arioch serves as a minor but essential link in Daniel's path to prominence at court.
