Old Testament

Eldad was a prophet who prophesied in the Israelite camp during the time of Moses.

Eldad was one of seventy elders designated by Moses to receive a portion of God's Spirit and assist him in leading Israel through the wilderness (Numbers 11:26–29). Unlike the sixty-eight elders who gathered at the tent of meeting, Eldad and Medad remained in the camp and prophesied there, causing some alarm. When Joshua urged Moses to stop them, Moses famously replied, 'Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the LORD's people were prophets, that the LORD would put his Spirit on them!' This episode anticipates the later ideal of universal prophetic gifting.
