Jehoiarib was the head of the first priestly division organized by King David.
Jehoiarib was the head of the first priestly division organized by King David, the first among the twenty-four divisions assigned by lot for temple service (1 Chronicles 24:7). His priestly family continued through the centuries; the Maccabean family—also known as the Hasmoneans—traced their priestly lineage to the division of Jehoiarib, giving this ancient division renewed prominence in the Second Temple period. The name Joiarib (a shorter form) appears among the post-exilic priests who returned with Zerubbabel (Nehemiah 11:10; 12:6).
