Old Testament

Mithredath, the treasurer of King Cyrus of Persia, was responsible for overseeing the return of the temple articles to Sheshbazzar, the prince of Judah.

Mithredath was the treasurer of King Cyrus of Persia, charged with overseeing the return of the sacred vessels that Nebuchadnezzar had removed from the Jerusalem temple (Ezra 1:8). Under his supervision 5,400 gold and silver articles were counted out and handed over to Sheshbazzar, the prince of Judah. His Persian name—meaning 'given by Mithra,' the Iranian deity of the sun—confirms his identity as a native Persian official in Cyrus's administration.
