Study Note

'He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again' — the verse translates charity into financial metaphor to overcome the practical objection that generosity to the poor is economically irrational. By framing the poor recipient as a conduit for a divine transaction — lending to the Lord himself — the verse grounds social compassion in theological reality rather than altruistic sentiment. Jesus's 'inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these... ye have done it unto me' (Matthew 25:40) develops the same identification between the divine and the poor, making care for the destitute an encounter with God himself.
