Deacons
Servants appointed to meet practical needs within the church, freeing leaders for prayer and the ministry of the word. Acts 6:1-7 describes the appointment of seven men to serve tables when Hellenistic widows were being overlooked. Paul lists qualifications for deacons in 1 Timothy 3:8-13: dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to wine, holding the mystery of faith with a clear conscience. Phoebe is described as a deacon (diakonos) of the church at Cenchreae (Romans 16:1). The office of deacon embodies Jesus' teaching that greatness in God's kingdom means humble service (Mark 10:43-45).
