Dove
A bird symbolizing peace, purity, and the Holy Spirit. Noah released a dove that returned with an olive branch, signaling the flood's end (Genesis 8:8-12). Song of Songs uses dove imagery for the beloved (2:14, 5:2). Jesus instructed his followers to be 'as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves' (Matthew 10:16). Most significantly, at Jesus' baptism 'the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove' (Luke 3:22). This association between the dove and the Spirit is one of Scripture's most enduring images. Psalm 55:6 expresses longing: 'Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest.'
