Fruit of the Spirit

The nine character qualities produced in believers by the Holy Spirit, listed in Galatians 5:22-23: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Paul contrasts these with the 'works of the flesh' (5:19-21), emphasizing that fruit grows naturally from the Spirit's indwelling rather than from human effort. The singular 'fruit' (not 'fruits') suggests these qualities form an integrated cluster — all present where the Spirit works. Jesus taught, 'By their fruit you will recognize them' (Matthew 7:16). John 15:4-5 connects fruit-bearing to abiding in Christ: 'Apart from me you can do nothing.' Spiritual fruit is evidence of genuine transformation.
