Imputation
The theological concept of crediting or reckoning something to a person's account. Scripture describes a double imputation: Adam's sin is imputed to all humanity (Romans 5:12-19), and Christ's righteousness is imputed to believers (2 Corinthians 5:21). Genesis 15:6 says Abraham 'believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness,' a verse Paul cites extensively in Romans 4 and Galatians 3. Imputation is not about making someone inherently righteous but declaring them righteous based on another's merit. This forensic concept undergirds the Protestant understanding of justification by faith alone.
