Pentecost
Originally the Jewish Feast of Weeks (Shavuot), celebrating the wheat harvest fifty days after Passover (Leviticus 23:15-22). In Acts 2, the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples at Pentecost with wind, fire, and speaking in tongues, empowering the church for worldwide mission. Peter interpreted the event through Joel 2:28-32: God pouring out his Spirit on all people. Three thousand were baptized that day (Acts 2:41). Pentecost marks the birthday of the church and the beginning of the Spirit's new covenant ministry. The harvest symbolism is fulfilled as the Spirit empowers the gathering of souls from every nation into God's kingdom.
