Wilderness Wandering
Israel's forty-year journey through the desert after the Exodus, a period of testing, provision, and formation. Numbers 14:33-34 records the punishment for the spies' faithless report: one year of wandering for each day of exploration. God provided manna (Exodus 16), water from the rock (Exodus 17:6, Numbers 20:11), and protection through the pillar of cloud and fire (Exodus 13:21-22). Deuteronomy 8:2-5 interprets the wandering as discipline: God 'humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.' The wilderness formed Israel into a nation under God.
