Study Note

'Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.' Matthew 21:5 and John 12:15 cite this verse as fulfilled in the Triumphal Entry, making it the most explicitly narrative prophetic fulfillment in the Passion accounts. The king is paradoxically characterized: triumphant ('shout for joy') yet humble ('lowly, riding on a donkey'). In ancient Near Eastern contexts, kings rode donkeys in times of peace and horses in war — this king comes on a peace-mount, embodying the salvation he brings rather than conquering through military force.
