Study Note
'I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.' Jesus's prayer of thanksgiving for revelation-to-the-humble follows the cities' rejection of his miracles (11:20-24) and introduces the 'gracious will' of the Father as the explanation for who receives the Son's knowledge. The inversion — hidden from the wise, revealed to infants — anticipates 1 Corinthians 1:27-29's 'God has chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise.' The immediate follow-on verse (26) — 'Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight' — grounds divine election entirely in divine good pleasure, not human qualification.
