Study Note
Jesus's call 'if any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me' redefines discipleship by the most culturally abhorrent image available in the Roman world — a condemned man's public procession to execution. The triple demand (deny self, take up cross, follow) represents a complete re-orientation of the self away from its own interests and toward the way of the one who will himself go to the cross. The immediately preceding rebuke of Peter ('get thee behind me, Satan, thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God') provides the dramatic context: the cross-free messianic expectation is identified as satanic temptation. Dietrich Bonhoeffer's 'The Cost of Discipleship' made this verse the centerpiece of his analysis of 'cheap grace' versus 'costly grace.'
