Study Note

Jesus's prediction 'many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven' — delivered in response to a Gentile centurion's faith — announces the eschatological inclusion of Gentiles at the patriarchal banquet while excluding the presumed heirs (Matthew 8:12). The image of reclining at table with the patriarchs draws on Isaiah 25:6-9's vision of the eschatological feast 'for all peoples' and the communal banquet imagery of 1 Enoch 62. The contrast between those who 'come from the east and west' (Gentiles) and 'the children of the kingdom' cast into darkness inverts ethnic-religious priority based on the criterion of faith. Paul develops this same logic in Romans 9-11, arguing that Gentile inclusion was always intrinsic to the Abrahamic promise.
