Ariel refers to two lion-like men of Moab who were killed by Benaiah, one of David's mighty warriors.
Ariel in 2 Samuel 23:20 (= 1 Chronicles 11:22) refers to 'the two sons of Ariel of Moab' (or 'two lion-like heroes of Moab' in some translations) who were killed by Benaiah son of Jehoiada, one of David's three greatest mighty men. Whether 'Ariel' is a personal name (father of the two Moabites) or a descriptive term (translated as 'lion of God' or 'lionlike men') is disputed in the textual tradition. Benaiah's killing of these two formidable opponents, along with a lion in a pit and an enormous Egyptian warrior, established his extraordinary reputation and led to his appointment over David's personal bodyguard.
