Salbung

The pouring of oil on a person or object to signify consecration and empowerment by God. Priests (Exodus 29:7), kings (1 Samuel 16:13), and prophets (1 Kings 19:16) were anointed for their roles. The Hebrew word mashiach (Messiah) and Greek christos (Christ) both mean 'anointed one.' Jesus read from Isaiah 61:1 — 'The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me' (Luke 4:18). James 5:14 instructs elders to anoint the sick with oil. First John 2:20 tells believers, 'You have an anointing from the Holy One.' Anointing symbolizes the Spirit's empowerment for service.
