Begräbnis
The interment of the dead, treated with great significance in biblical culture. Abraham purchased the cave of Machpelah to bury Sarah (Genesis 23). Jacob and Joseph both requested burial in the promised land (Genesis 49:29-30, 50:25). To be left unburied was considered a terrible fate (Jeremiah 22:19). Jesus' burial fulfilled prophecy: 'He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death' (Isaiah 53:9, Matthew 27:57-60). Paul connects baptism with burial: 'We were buried with him through baptism into death' (Romans 6:4). Burial expresses respect for the body and hope in resurrection.
