Kontextualisierung

The practice of presenting the unchanging gospel in culturally appropriate forms, modeled by Paul and the early church. Paul became 'all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some' (1 Corinthians 9:22). In Athens, he quoted Greek poets and engaged with local philosophy (Acts 17:22-31). The Jerusalem Council (Acts 15) decided not to impose Jewish cultural practices on Gentile believers. Jesus used agricultural metaphors with rural audiences and fishing metaphors with Galilean fishermen. Contextualization is not compromise but communication — translating the gospel into the thought forms, language, and cultural categories of the receptor audience while preserving its essential truth.
