Study Note

Peter's greeting to the 'elect exiles' describes their election according to 'the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood' — a trinitarian soteriology in a single prepositional phrase. The 'foreknowledge' (prognōsis) is not merely intellectual prescience but the Hebrew idea of relational pre-selection (compare Amos 3:2: 'you only have I known of all the families of the earth'). The 'sprinkling with blood' alludes to Exodus 24:8, where Moses sprinkled the covenant blood on the people sealing the Sinaitic covenant — here applied to the new covenant sealed in Christ's blood. The threefold structure (Father foreknows, Spirit sanctifies, Son's blood is applied) provides the basis for the later trinitarian formulae of the creeds.
